Bad weather is suspected to be the cause of the crash, Air Force Chief of Staff Agus Supriatna told MetroTV. The plane took off from the city of Timika before crashing near its destination about 124 miles away in Wamena, Ivan Ahmad Riski Titus, operational director of Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency, said according to the Associated Press.Titus said rescuers located the crash site on Lisuwa mountain and bodies of the victims were being brought back to Wamena.
The plane was reportedly carrying food supplies and cement when it crashed just minutes before its scheduled landing. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
President Joko Widodo said on his Twitter account authorities will carry out a review to so that such incidents do not happen again.
