Government Set To Restore Colonial Karene District And Create New Province

During his speech at the official opening of the Fifth Session of the Fourth Parliament of the second Republic of Sierra Leone,  President Koroma talked on major challenges as well as successes  of his government.  He said something striking about his intention to restore the
Karene District,  thereby dividing  Koinadugu into two separate Districts creating a new province.

Karene was a district that existed before the independence of Sierra Leone in 1961. There are presently three provinces named by their geographic locations  North, South and East. The west is known as the Western Area. With the creation of a new province, people are concerned whether the existing names will change.
President Koroma began his speech with a vow to move the country forward, “to transform its roads, improve electricity, invest in health and improve Sierra Leone’s reputation as a peace-loving, democratic and resilient nation.”
The President took a swipe at critics, including journalists, inviting them into the political ring. “Come to the ring, don’t wait until challenges mount and you start saying how patriotic and wise you are because you never joined in the battle,” he said.
