In an effort to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, Salone Rising a non-governmental organization aimed at empowering people and enterprises in Sierra Leone has provided grants to market women in the Koinadugu District.
This comes in the wake of the current economic meltdown resulting in high costs of living and soaring commodity prices. “It started in 2015 and since that time we have given grants to over eighty women in Kabala,” Mr Kamanda of Salone Rising explained. Around April 2016, Salone Rising gave 25 people, women and men, mostly petty traders each a grant of Le 750,000 to add to their initial capital for business. “Previously, these businesses could only dream of making a turnover of Le750, 000,” Mr Kamanda furthered.
“What a boost!”
The local NGO has positioned itself to provide necessary training to the women beneficiaries on good business practices, book keeping and financial management, thereby helping them to run their businesses with a line of demarcation between profit and capital. Saio Marah, a petty trader and beneficiary of the grant added, “Since I received the Salone Rising grant, my business has seen a significant growth. My business was affected by the Ebola scourge but since I received this money it’s been a good start off,” she added.
Salone Rising, with a core mandate to ’empower people and enterprise, and create jobs’ is also providing grants to farmers in the Koinadugu district.
