Palo Conteh
Members of Parliament (MPs) have consented to the proposed increase in the price of Sierra Leonean passports. The new price will be Le750,000. Following a briefing by
Rtd. Maj. Palo Conteh, in Parliament, he said, “There is hue and cry all over the country about subsidy. If we continue to subsidize our services, we will never develop”, Conteh said.
There are five questions on everyone’s mind. What is the current fee for passports? Is there any increase in the passport fees? When are these new rates effective? Upon what legal instrument that your Ministry made this increase? What is the cost of an application form? Conteh then said, “Section 7 of the Immigration Act of 1964, clearly states that it is the Minister of Internal Affairs who is responsible to fix the price of a passport”.
Responding to the questions, the Minister of Internal Affairs said the current fees for passport is Le500,000, stating that there is a proposed increase for the fees to Le750,000.
Responding to the question of “when” are these new rates effective, he said it should have been effective since the first of November, 2016, “but with the intervention of Parliament we have decided to await the outcome of this meeting”.
