Local media said the death toll was likely to rise due to the large number of people wounded in the attack and a challenging rescue operation.
Nobody has yet taken responsibility for the bombing, which reportedly took place during prayers at the Sufi shrine of Shah Noorani, near Khuzdar in a remote part of the troubled province of Balochistan.
The newspaper Dawn reported that emergency services were struggling in the aftermath of the bombing, since there is no major hospital nearby. Anwar Kakar, a spokesman for the Balochistan government, told the paper: “There are no helicopters available with the provincial government to evacuate the injured.” The most seriously injured are being transported to Karachi, 250km to the south, provincial minister Mir Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti said.
