Sierra Leone’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) has said that political parties are going to be involved in the entire process of civil and voter registration.
This should relieve some of the concern and reservations expressed by some political parties.
The Director of External Relations, Albert Massaquoi, said, “Political parties will have various roles and responsibilities such as observing the entire process. Though they may disagree with some of the activities, we will make sure Parties are involved.”

Giving additional information on the activities of the Electoral Commission, Miata French, NEC’s Western Area Commissioner, said, “The reason we are merging the two registrations, civil and voter, is to avoid the constraint of registering twice.”
“We will capture all the information required for the civil register, we will take what we need for our voter register and then we will hand over the rest of the information to the National Registration Secretariat for them to do the civil registration”, French explained.
Regarding the time stipulated for the registration process, the Commissioner said, “We are looking at the 15 days period but will consider the fact that we have to cover additional information. The information we are capturing will about voters and for the civil register.”
